영국공원의 벤치에서 느끼는 떠난 사람들에 대한 그리움...

유럽이나 북미의 나라들을 여행하시다 보면 

도시의 한가운데 있는 아름다운 공원들을 방문하실 기회가 있으실 것입니다. 

공원을 걷다 보면 사람들이 쉬어갈 수 있는 벤치들이 곳곳에  있는데, 

자세히 보시면  사람의 이름이나 짧은 글이 새겨진 작은 명판들(Plaque)이 붙어 있는 벤치들이 많습니다. 

이런 벤치들은 이곳에서 Memorial Bench (또는 Memorial Seat)라고 불리는데, 

돌아가신 분들을 위해 생전에 그분들이 자주 방문하시거나 좋아하시던 곳에 

가족들이 추도의 의미로 설치해 놓은 것입니다. 

어떤 경우는  돌아가시기 전에 본인이 미리 벤치에 새길 문구나 시 같은 것을 정해 놓고 

그 비용을 미리 따로 마련해서 자기가 좋아하는 곳에 설치해달라고 유언장에 남기시는 분들도 있습니다.  

한국에서는 돌아가시는 분들의 무덤이 집에서 대개 아주 먼 곳에 있어 

가족들이 자주 방문할 수 없는 경우가 많은데 비해서, 

이곳에서는 대개 가까운 동네 교회 마당이나 시내 곳곳에 있는 묘지 같은 곳에 있는 경우가 많습니다.

그래서 가족들이 생일 같은 특별한 날 뿐 아니라

문득 보고 싶을 때마다,

또는 시간 나는 대로 출퇴근 길에 꽃을 사서 잠시 들릴 수도 있습니다. 

제가 자주 방문하는 공원들에도 이러한 벤치들이 많이 있는데, 

특히 부활절이나 크리스마스 같은 이곳의 명절 기간 전후나 

어머니 날, 아버지날 , 발렌타인데이 같은 시기가 되면 

공원 곳곳에 돌아가신 분들의 가족들이 다녀가신 흔적들이 보입니다. 

지난 일요일이 이곳 영국에서는 어머니 날(Mother's Day)이었기에  

근처 공원의 벤치 곳곳에도 가족들이 놓고 간  꽃들이 많이 보입니다.

벤치에 새겨진 추모의 글 (memorial inscriptions)이나 가족들이 다녀간 그 흔적들을 볼 때마다, 

남겨진 가족들의 돌아가신 분들에 대한 그리움과 동시에 

그분들에 대한 끝나지 않는 애잔한 사랑이 잘 느껴집니다.

영국의 작가 사뮤엘 버틀러는 '잊히지 않는 사람은 죽은 것이 아니다.'라고 말했습니다. 전 떠난 분들을 이렇게 그리워 하는 남은 사람들의 기억 속에서 삷과 죽음이 영원히 연결되어 있다고 생각합니다.

It has been a year since my dear sweet Grandmother passed away… 

She was 96 years old. 

I wonder if it would get any easier to lose someone, 

knowing they lived a long happy life? 

I have lost a few very significant people in my life, 

including my dear grandparents and friends of similar age to myself.  

It always  seemed cruel and terribly unfair. 

As I see it,  saying goodbye never does get easier, 

only harder... much, much harder.  

I still miss them till today.

And it still hurts as well. 

However, in a way, I do not want the hurt to go away, 

so that they will always be important to me.

Now I try to accept the fact that some people are in our lives for the length of time they are meant to be, 

even if why they go away when they do is not always obvious...
